What to Expect
What to expect at a typical lactation consultation with your baby
I will listen to you, and to your baby. We will do as much as your baby has the energy for during our 60-90 minute session, and sometimes they sleep through the whole thing! This is also why I often recommend more than one visit, especially for latching or feeding issues.
During our consult, we will discuss your goals and experiences. I will usually weigh the baby before then observe a feeding session, help the baby to latch at the breast (which depends on your baby’s mood & energy level), and/or evaluate a pumping session. I will do a breast/chest exam (including measure nipple size if you pump) and assess the baby's body and mouth when calm (either before or after the feeding session). I will answer your questions, provide you with education and resources based on my assessment, and give referrals as necessary. After the consultation, you will receive an online, customized care plan through my portal, and we will check in a day or two later via a video visit or my SMS portal. I will also send reports to your health care providers within 2 days.
The majority of feeding problems can’t be solved immediately and take practice, hard work, patience, and time to resolve, which is why follow-up consultations are often needed. You will have phone and secure messaging support from me between visits - please take advantage of this. If I don't hear from you, I can only assume everything is going well. I care deeply about my clients and my work, and want to do everything I can to help you feel supported and successful as a parent!
